These 9 People Went Viral Because Of Their Pictures Much Before The 'Hot Chaiwala'

It takes only a picture to change someone’s life. Pakistani ‘chaiwala’ Arshad Khan who became an overnight success would agree, after his picture went viral on social media. Arshad is not the only one whose life changed because of a portrait. Here are other famous people who became famous only after they were captured by the camera.

1. Sharbat Gula - Afghan girl

In 1984, renowned photographer Steve McCurry captured a phenomenal picture that made him famous worldwide. McCurry took a picture of a girl with huge, green eyes look straight at his camera. The girl, identified as Sharbat Gula was living as a refugee in Pakistan during the time of the Soviet occupation of her country when the picture was captured. After her picture made it to the cover of the National Geographic magazine, she was called "the First World's Third World Mona Lisa".

2. Omran Daqnish – the Syrian boy

The photograph of a five-year-old injured Syrian boy broke hearts all over. Omran Daqnish was injured in an alleged Russian Air Force strike on the rebel-held al-Qaterji neighbourhood of Aleppo, Syria. Covered in rubble and blood smeared on his face, Omran became an instant reminder of war’s horror.

3. Omar Borkan Al Gala – the handsome man

Remember the man who was deported from Saudi Arabia for being too handsome? Omar Borkan Al Gala made hearts flutter when he made news all over the world for his smouldering good looks. Now, Omar stays in Vancouver and is a full-time model.

A swimming baby reaching for a dollar. Rings a bell immediately right? Band Nirvana had an unusual cover with a swimming baby on it’s Nevermind album cover. For the 10th, 17th and 25th anniversaries of the album, he recreated the shot and got his own album made.

5. Florence Owens Thompson - face of the great depression

Dorothea Lange captured an apt picture which thoroughly represented the Great Depression of 1929. When Lange was travelling through California, she came across Florence Owens Thompson, a struggling mother with her children, which later became the icon of the period.

This iconic image from the Vietnam war made Jan Rose Kasmir, the ‘flower girl’. Photographer Marc Riboud captured the picture of 17-year-old Kasmir clasping a chrysanthemum and gazing at bayonet-wielding soldiers.

7. Oliwia Dabrowska – The girl in red coat

Oliwia played the role of the girl in the red coat in the famous Steven Spielberg’s film ‘Schlinder’s List’. She was the only flash of colour in the otherwise black-and-white film.

8. Phan Thi Kim Phuc – The napalm girl

The Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph taken during the Vietnam War has a crying Phan Thi Kim Phuc along with the other kids on the streets of Vietnam. She and her friends became homeless when South Vietnamese planes dropped a napalm bomb on Trang Bang, which had been attacked and occupied by North Vietnamese forces. After taking the controversial picture, AP photographer Nick Ut admitted Phan and the children to the local hospital.

9. Madhura Honey – The photobomb girl

The opening ceremony of Olympics 2012 changed the life of Madhura Honey forever. It was Madhura who photobombed the Indian contingent by casually walking with them during the parade. A series of hilarious memes followed where people photoshopped Madhura photobombing other historic moments.
